3 Debate Questions for Russ Feingold
Arlington, VA – In advance of today’s Wisconsin Senate debate, Freedom Partners Action Fund has put together three key questions about Russ Feingold’s record and policies […]

Senator Ron Johnson faced an uphill climb in this race against former Senator Russ Feingold, who entered the race in May 2015 with a ten-point lead. Early investments by Freedom Partners Action Fund highlighted Feingold’s mishandling of the opioid scandal at the Tomah VA facility, elevated the issue for many Wisconsinites and forced the Feingold campaign to spend aggressively to counter the message.
While the race remained within about ten points until the final month of the campaign, consistent pressure on Feingold helped keep Johnson within striking distance. In August, Freedom Partners Action Fund saw the shift in the polls and went back up with ads continuing to highlight Feingold’s failure to help veterans at Tomah.
Ultimately, Senator Ron Johnson completed a remarkable comeback, winning Wisconsin and defeating Feingold to hold his seat.
Freedom Partners Action Fund supports U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson because, as a businessman, he understands that the best action government can take to grow the economy is to get out of the way. That’s why he supported reining in spending, and reducing taxes and regulations to give businesses the opportunity to create the good-paying jobs and a healthy economy that Wisconsin needs. Johnson has also been a leader in calling for accountability in government institutions created to serve our nation’s veterans.
Former three-term U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold is a career politician and Washington insider. After he voted more than 250 times for higher taxes and Obamacare, Wisconsinites decided in 2010 that Feingold was no longer fit to serve them in Congress. His record as a wasteful spender, and his opposition to a Balanced Budget Amendment shows he is unwilling to be held accountable for our hard-earned tax dollars. Perhaps most troubling was Feingold failed to act on two memos marked delivered that indicated reckless and dangerous behavior at a Wisconsin VA facility - behavior that ultimately resulted in the death of a veteran. Wisconsinites deserve someone who fights for veterans, families and taxpayers.
“Ryan Honl, a military veteran who briefly worked at the VA, stars in the Freedom Partners Action Fund ad. The group, which was started by conservative businessmen Charles and David Koch, is spending $2 million to air the ad statewide. ‘I found out that Russ Feingold got a memo in 2009 that outlined veteran harm and nothing was done,’ Honl says in the minute-long ad. ‘Russ Feingold ignored veterans' concerns, while veterans were dying at the facility.’” Read More
“Just weeks after canceling more than $2 million in advertising to help Sen. Ron Johnson's reelection bid, a deep-pocketed outside group affiliated with conservative billionaire Charles Koch and his brother, David, announced Thursday that it is spending $1 million to influence the Senate race. Freedom Partners Action Fund launched digital ads in the state Thursday and will start television ads Friday. ‘We've seen some changes in the polls,’ Freedom Partners spokesman James Davis told USA TODAY.” Read More
